Kaplan University Testimonial by Christy Meredith

Kaplan University
A.A. in Medical Assisting, 2010

My name is Christy Meredith. I am 25-years-old and I attend Kaplan University online. I live in Southern Indiana. I am married and have two kids, Jasmine and Daemeon.

I want people to read this and want to do the same as me, accomplishing something for yourself. I am new to the whole college thing and so far, I love it. I am learning new things and surprising myself by remembering most of it. Usually I forget everything, but I guess because doing this is so important to me, to get my Associate's degree in Medical Assisting, it's different.

You see when I was growing up, I never really had a good authority figure to tell me why I need to graduate and go to college. I had a lot of problems when I was a child. I was molested by the only father that I knew (my stepfather) and everyone in my family, except my grandfather, did not believe me. I do not know why they didn't because I never really lied to them. They did not believe me until my sister came out and told them what he had done to her. So I acted out because of it. My mother stopped talking to me for a little while after I came out and told the truth. I met my real father when I was 14; my mother thought it was best to keep me from him because he used to do a lot of drugs. I was still a wild child I finally told the court system that I wanted to live in the state's custody so I can get the help that I really needed.

Anyway, back to the real reason why I am doing this. I am attending college so I can get a better job and have more money to play with. I am trying to also show my children that it is important to get your degree because if not, then you will wind up with a dead end job. I chose to go into the medical field because of the fact that everyone needs medical assistance.

My favorite teacher was the one I just recently had, Mrs. Stanford. She teaches two classes, Medical Law & Ethics and Composition College 2. For the record, this is also the best grades I have ever had so far in my life—I am averaging A's and B's. So far my children really don't like when I get on the computer while I am studying. I get everything done before the weekend so I can spend more time with my family. They all support me and praise me when I tell them the grades I am making. I like online college because of the fact that I can be in class and not have any distractions from other students. Plus it saves me a lot in gas money because I live so far from any college and I cannot be away from my family for a long time. Now if I did not have any kids or weren't married, then I probably would attend traditional college. The things that I like about my school is that if I need help or anything I can just contact a fellow student, teacher, or the online 24/7 tutor.

If I could, I would yell at others to do the same as me so they can achieve more than they ever had. But I cannot because most people I know already have a degree. I did get my sister into doing it though, but she attends a different online school. My stepmother got me into doing online school and I plan on graduating in 2010.
