Orthotics & Prosthetics

Orthotics and prosthetics is the evaluation, fabrication, and fitting of artificial limbs and orthopedic braces. Professionals working in the field include O&P practitioners, pedorthists, assistants, fitters, and technicians. Although each specialty within orthotics and prosthetics has its own educational requirements, the majority of those entering the field have obtained at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, bioengineering, kinesiology, or biology. In addition, many of those starting careers in O&P choose to receive certification by the American Board for Certification (ABC). For those who have strong interpersonal skills, a desire to improve the lives of others, and an aptitude for math and science, a career in O&P can be a challenging and rewarding option. Salaries for those with board certification in orthotics, prosthetics, and pedorthics average $89,334 per year. Job opportunities are expected to skyrocket in the future, as the number of people with paralysis, deformity, or orthopedic impairments is projected to reach 7.3 million by the year 2020.
