Optical/Optometric Assistant

Optometric assistants are specialized medical assistants who work primarily with optometrists to provide chair-side assistance, conduct preliminary tests on patients, and instruct patients on proper contact lens and eyeglass use and care. Although some optometric assistants receive on-the-job training, most have completed a one or two year medical assisting program at an accredited vocational institution, technical school, or community college, thus earning certification prior to entering the field. Optometric assistants earn an average of $22,850 annually. Employment rate for those entering the field is projected to increase greatly in the coming years, with the greatest opportunities going to those with the most training, experience, and certifications.
