It is a good idea to begin planning for a possible career in healthcare management as early as possible. Excellent grades in high school and college are important, especially for students interesting in entering into graduate or doctoral programs.
That being said, today’s healthcare management students are not bound by the traditional route of earning a Master’s degree in health administration or public health. Instead, students are looking into other excellent options including graduate degrees in business and public administration, with course concentration in health services management.
Some schools joint degrees such as a Master’s in both business administration and public health, or in both healthcare management and law. Graduate programs generally last two years and they typically include course work in healthcare policy and law, marketing, organizational behavior, healthcare financing, human resources, and other healthcare management topics. The program may also include a supervised internship, residency, or fellowship.
